Insertion & Removal of Subdermal Implant

Insertion and Removal of Subdermal Implants refer to procedures involving small, flexible rods or capsules placed under the skin to provide long-term, reversible contraception. The most commonly used subdermal implant is Nexplanon, which releases a progestin hormone (etonogestrel) to prevent pregnancy.

What is a Subdermal Implant?

  • A small rod (about the size of a matchstick) inserted under the skin of the upper arm.
  • Provides contraception for up to 3-5 years, depending on the specific product.
  • Works by:
    1. Preventing ovulation.
    2. Thickening cervical mucus to block sperm
    3. Thinning the uterine lining to prevent implantation.
